Warren Littlefield, former President of Entertainment of NBC, has a new book out, Top of the Rock (Doubleday), and he spills secrets on putting together Must See TV and what it took to get shows on the air.
He said Seinfeld was one of the worst pilots of all time. Audiences did not like it at first. They found money to film four episodes to keep the show going by making one less two-hour Bob Hope special. They offered Jerry Seinfeld Over $100 million to do another season of Seinfeld thinking no one could turn down that much money; Jerry turned it down.
He also relates how Nicolette Sheridan auditioned for the role of Grace (Will and Grace) in black leather pants that were literally sprayed on. When she asked the director if there was anything else she could do, he said, ‘Tighter pants.”
While some reviews say the book glosses over some areas, most agree it’s a great look back at when TV was appointment viewing and the men who made it so.
