Happy Anniversary “Saturday Night Live”

Comedian George Carlin was the first guest host of the Emmy Award winning “Saturday Night Live” on this date in 1975.  The show was created by and is still produced by Lorne Michaels for NBC.

The live comedy show’s sketches parody popular culture and politcs.  The original cast included:  John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Chey Chase, Laraine  Newman, Jane Curtain, (Detroit’s own)  Gilda Radner and Garrett Morris.  Each week SNL features a celebrity guest host who opens the show and performs in sketches with the cast.  The show also features a house band and “musical guest”.  Joining Carlin on show number one was Billy Preston and Janis Ian.

94 year old announcer Don Pardo has done nearly every show and remains with SNL to this day.

Listen to the premiere 60 minute episode encapsulated in just 60 seconds.
